Your Child’s First Week in Care: Easy Transition Tips

The first week of child care is a big change—for kids and parents. A few simple routines can make drop-offs smoother and help your child settle in with more confidence.

1) Start with a gradual transition (if you can)

If your schedule allows, begin with shorter days and build up over the first few visits. It helps your child get familiar with the space, the provider, and the routine without feeling rushed.

2) Practice your new routine before day one

A few days ahead, shift bedtime, wake-up, breakfast, and nap timing closer to your child care schedule. Kids do best with predictable routines, and this small prep can reduce stress on the first morning.

3) Keep goodbyes short and consistent

Choose a simple goodbye routine (hug, wave, “See you after snack!”) and stick to it. Lingering often makes separation harder, while calm confidence helps your child feel safe.

4) Send a comfort item (if allowed)

A familiar small item—like a stuffed animal, blanket, or family photo—can help children feel secure in a new setting.

5) Share the details that help your provider help you

Tell your provider what works at home: nap cues, soothing strategies, favorite foods, and any triggers. The more aligned you are early on, the smoother the week tends to go.

6) Expect feelings (and allow them)

Tears at drop-off can be normal—even when the provider is great and your child is okay minutes later. Acknowledge feelings, keep your message reassuring, and follow the routine.

7) Do a quick daily reset at pickup

Ask one simple question each day (for example: “What went well today?”). Small, steady check-ins help you track progress without overwhelming your child or your provider.
